About Dolla Van

Dolla Van Music, DVM,  was founded by Lee major and Light A Fiyah. Members of the Bush Babees, the second wave of Native Tongue MC’s known for their dynamic fusion of Hip Hop and Reggae. DVM is an evolution of this fusion capturing the essence of Flatbush Brooklyn’s Caribbean vibes. In Flatbush, Dollar Vans started operating after the 1980 New York City transit strike. When all transit operated by New York City Transit Authority was stopped. Caribbean residents of transit-deprived parts of NYC started a shared taxi service with minibuses and their own private vehicles. This was a rebellious move not sanctioned by the city but supported by everyone in the community.  Vans customized with a firey nickname, usually in the tint just above the windshield,  would weave in and out of traffic, blasting the latest reggae/dancehall music with the deepest most insane bass lines.  Caribbean migrants brought not only a strong will but their love of music.

DVM uses a blend of lyrical precision with infectious flows to embody the rebellious spirit of Hip Hop and the righteous indignation of Reggae and Dancehall music.  Like a Hip Hop cypher taking place during the West Indian day parade on a truck rolling down Eastern Parkway. This is the raw energy that fuels the Dolla Van movement.
